Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
What is an eTA?
An Electronic Travel Authorization, or eTA, is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals who travel to Canada by air. It is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport and allows boarding a flight to Canada. An eTA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry. Final entry decisions are always made by a border officer. An approved eTA is generally valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and can be used for multiple trips. An eTA only authorizes travel to Canada. It does not give the right to work or study and does not extend or replace visitor status once you are inside Canada. All eTA applications are assessed by IRCC.
Which countries require an eTA?
An eTA is required for citizens of visa-exempt countries who travel to Canada by air. This includes, among others, citizens of the European Union countries, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Singapore, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and most other visa-exempt countries. U.S. citizens do not need an eTA. Canadian citizens and permanent residents also do not need an eTA. Travellers entering Canada by land or sea do not need an eTA, even if they are from a visa-exempt country. The official and complete list of countries whose citizens need an eTA is maintained by IRCC and should always be checked before travel, as requirements can change.
Where to apply for an eTA?
An eTA can only be obtained through the official Canadian government website.
The application is completed online and typically requires a valid passport, an email address, and a credit card. The government fee is CAD $7.
When an eTA may be refused or cancelled?
An eTA can be refused or cancelled if there are concerns about inadmissibility, past immigration violations, criminal history, misrepresentation, or unclear travel purpose. Even with an approved eTA, entry can still be refused at the border if the officer is not satisfied that the visit is temporary or that the traveller meets entry requirements.
How long does it take to process an eTA?
An eTA application is submitted online and usually processed quickly, but some applications are flagged for additional review and may take longer. Errors in the application or incomplete answers can lead to delays or refusal. If your plans involve long stays, frequent travel, or a future immigration application, the eTA should be assessed carefully to avoid issues at the border.
