Common-Law Sponsorship

Common-law sponsorship allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their common-law partner, someone they’ve lived with in a marriage-like relationship for at least 12 consecutive months, for permanent residency (PR). This grants the partner the right to live, work, and study in Canada permanently.

You may sponsor your common-law partner regardless of whether they are currently inside or outside Canada.

📝 Sponsor Eligibility

✔️ Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
✔️ Be at least 18 years old
✔️ Not be in prison, bankrupt, or under a removal order
✔️ Not have sponsored a spouse or partner within the last 5 years
✔️ Be able to prove you’ve lived together in a marriage-like relationship for at least 12 consecutive months
