Visitor Visa (TRV) Refusal
Why is a TRV usually refused?
A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is refused when an IRCC officer is not satisfied that the applicant will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay or that the application meets the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Refusals are often not about one single issue, but about the overall credibility of the application and how well the evidence supports the temporary nature of the visit.
Which reasons do IRCC officers give for refusal?
Refusal letters usually list standard reasons such as insufficient ties to the home country, weak travel history, unclear purpose of travel, insufficient financial support, or concerns about current immigration status. In many cases, the refusal wording is generic and does not fully explain the officer’s real concerns, which are often revealed only after reviewing the officer’s notes. Applications are also refused due to inconsistent information, missing documents, or explanations that do not align with the applicant’s personal or immigration history.
What to do if your TRV was refused?
A refusal does not mean you cannot apply again, but reapplying without addressing the refusal reasons usually leads to another refusal. It is important to understand exactly why the application was refused and to fix the weaknesses before submitting a new one. Reapplying with a lawyer is strongly recommended, as a proper reapplication requires analyzing the refusal letter, reviewing officer notes, reassessing the overall strategy, and preparing a clear and targeted legal explanation that directly addresses the officer’s concerns.
How much does it cost to reapply?
Our legal fees for a TRV reapplication are the same as for an original TRV application and typically range from CAD $400 to $700, depending on the complexity of the case and refusal history. The IRCC government fee for a TRV application is CAD $100, plus CAD $85 if biometrics are required and have not been given before.
How to succeed on reapplication?
A successful reapplication focuses on quality, not volume. The new application must clearly explain what has changed since the refusal and why the concerns no longer apply. Evidence should be consistent, specific, and tailored to the applicant’s situation. Strong proof of ties to the home country, a well-defined and realistic purpose of travel, and a clear explanation of immigration history are critical. Generic explanations and recycled documents from the refused application should be avoided, as they almost always lead to another refusal.
Our scope of services
Our work on a TRV reapplication includes a full review of the refusal decision, analysis of the refusal reasons and officer concerns, and assessment of all relevant immigration history. We identify risk factors, develop a reapplication strategy, and advise on how to properly address the issues that led to refusal. We prepare and review all required forms and supporting documents, draft a clear and targeted legal explanation responding directly to the refusal, and submit the reapplication to IRCC.
